100ish

100 words about nothing — and everything.

  1. COMPUTER MICE

I never thought much about computer mice. I usually just bought the cheapest mouse I could find and paid under ten bucks.

But then I wondered: are there better ones out there?

I’m not a gamer and have no need for a super-fast or super-lightweight mouse. I need something that’s fast, easy to use and relatively cheap.

I do like one with a back button.

I also prefer 2.4GHz over Bluetooth mice. They just work better for me. Bluetooth is a little janky compared with a little USB dongle. I understand the convenience, but I’ve never had much luck with it.

I also tried those ergonomic mice.

    Nope.

I cannot get used to the feel.

    So standard mice it is.

    Cheap and Boring

For a plain old generic boring mouse, the Logitech M185 will work just fine and can usually be found for under $15.

    A Little Fancier

The Acer Wireless Mouse is about the same price as the Logitech and has my back and forward buttons. You can also change the DPI if that’s something you need.

    Go All Out

Okay, this isn’t really going all out.

I’m not spending more than about $30 on a mouse.

The Logitech M510 is a full-size mouse and even offers some weird side scrolling.

    My Pick

    The Acer.

It’s cheap, a little bigger, and has my much-needed back button.

That’s really all I want from a mouse.

  2. Priced a toilet seat lately?

    Yeah, me either.

But earlier this week I realized the crappy HOMOROW toilet (or whatever name it’s called) is designed by somebody that likes engineering better than practicality and this toilet that I bought has the weirdest way to connect a seat. The seat clips onto a cheap plastic thing that’s supposed to hold the entire thing together.

    SPOILER: It doesn’t work.

I did manage to get a good five years out of this toilet seat and that’s not bad but the trouble started when I decided to try and find a replacement.

“Oh. That model was discontinued’, the manufacturer replied.

ARE YOU TELLING ME I HAVE TO BUY a brand new toilet BECAUSE YOU STOPPED MAKING THEM?

    YES.

I did what anyone else would do - see if I can find a replacement on Amazon because if they don’t have it - I am really screwed.

Thankfully they had it in stock and although it cost over $40 I can now say I have a working toilet seat where you’re not afraid of falling off the toilet.

ps. if you liked this story - I am attempting to turn my writing into $100 a day of income. Wish me luck and when you shop Amazon I make a small bit from your purchase - toilet seat or otherwise.

pps. buy the brand name toilet - trust me on this one.

  3. Here’s the scene:

Your daughter has somehow killed the 14th power adapter this year for her tablet. First, micro USB was supposed to be the answer.

Then it was the lightning cable. Great - another standard to deal with. Cool name though.

And then it was USB-C and we thought we had died and gone to heaven because after a few years everything took the same charger.

    The problem?

    Everything takes the same charger

That means that there somehow are more devices than chargers and chargers disappear or the wire frays at the end even though the website states that it’s been tested 10,000 times.

In reality it hasn’t been tested by a 7-year-old that yanks on the cord or by the roomba that thinks charging cables make a good snack.

This leaves you with less cables than devices.

    Always.

There’s a fix for that: buy the name brand one for a few bucks more, add some cables and you don’t have to think about the charging situation for a while.

Just keep an eye on the 7-year-old.

  4. FORTY BUCKS.

    For a Travel mug.

Well, technically it’s a thing that keeps your coffee from ending up in your lap on the way to work.

    But still.

    Forty. Freaking. Dollars.

These things seem to be selling, and the reviews (like all reviews) mostly seem positive, so I guess it’s not a complete piece of junk.

But $40 to get your coffee from point A to point B?

Unless you’re camping, maybe? I dunno.

For most of us who just want to sip and drive on the way to work, I think you might be able to find something cheaper than that.

You need to get hot coffee from point A to point B without wearing it on the way to work.

IF YOU MUST — Get this one on Amazon.

JIM’S PICK — THIS DOES THE JOB TOO FOR A LOT LESS.

    That would be me.

Wait, obsessed is extreme. Enthusiastic might be a better term, and I will tell you why headphones are better than speakers.

    THE WIFE APPROVES

That’s it. That’s the note right there. 50 lbs of Amplifiers and pre-amplifers and floor standing speakers in the middle of a living room are hard sell

A small table, with a tiny headphone amplifier and a pair of headphones? Easy sell and it gets you most of the way there compared to the pricier living room set.

Yes, if you’re an audiophile and have a dedicated room and an even more dedicated spouse than well - good for you.

But for the rest of us that are just trying to listen to Pink Floyd’s The Wall in it’s entirety once the kids go to bed then high end headphones are the way to go.
